SEO MISTAKES TO AVOID
The majority of people use search engines to find websites, so you have to make sure your website is optimized for them. But in the process of search engine optimization, people often make some mistakes that do more harm than good.

Some of the mistakes that are commonly made by webmasters trying to optimize their own websites include the following:

Avoid Keyword Stuffing-
Although you do want to use your keywords for search engine optimization, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Don’t include your keyword more than 5 times on the page (and even that is pushing it) and make sure to spread them out.
Inadequate Site Navigation-
The best web page in the world is not going to rank high for a search if it does not have a way to be located. You need to make sure that your website has at least 2 ways of navigating from any given page on it, and these should include sitemaps and directories. Make your website’s navigation user-friendly.
Non-Existent Page Title-
Some webmasters will call this a meta title, but they function the same way. The first thing that people see when your website pops up on their screen is the page title from your browser’s toolbar. Make sure you have a descriptive and keyword-filled page title for each of your pages.
Messed Up Internal Linking-
First and most importantly, make sure your website is easy to navigate. This means crawling or clicking through all of the pages to find where they link back to your homepage. If you use an unordered list for navigation, this should not be a problem. Also, pay attention to which terms you are using to link to other parts of your website.
Missing Meta Descriptions-
When someone does a search, the page that comes up first has a short description describing it. When this page is chosen, they will see the meta description right below it. If you don’t have one (and most people don’t) then they will just see a list of search results with a line of text from each website. This is not doing you any good, so make sure to have meta descriptions for each page of your website.
Missing Outbound Links-
Search engines look at the websites that link to yours and determine your site’s relevance from it. It also helps them figure out which search terms you may be trying to rank for. Make sure there are links on every page of your website that point back to other relevant or related sites. You can even get away with linking to your competitors.
No Blog on your website-
This mistake is easily made by newer webmasters, but it can really hurt you in the search engine rankings. Having a blog on your website gives search engines more keywords and websites to crawl through. They also like blogs because they are updated regularly (though not too often) and get fresh content. Make sure to keep your blog up to date, and you’ll find that it will start to rank on its own.
No Social Media-
If you want people, including search engines, to know about your website, then social media is a must. Social signals are an important part of organic SEO results. If you want people to be able to find your website, then you need links on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
No Schema Markup-
Using schema markup is beneficial for SEO because it specifies what information is about (for example, your business’s name). If you use the wrong kind of markup or don’t use enough, your website’s appearance in search engines can be adversely affected.
Say no to spamming-
Webmasters who try to cut corners on their SEO practices, use spammy links or other shady methods are not getting “backlinks” so much as they are hurting their own authority. By using the same techniques your competitors use, you aren’t gaining an advantage, you are just taking your website down with them.
Not a crawlable link-
Make sure to have a sitemap for your website so that search engines can easily navigate it. It doesn’t use any keywords or metadata, but it does help speed up the crawling process. Make sure it is accessible by using a sitemap plugin and submitting it to a search engine with a quick message.
Do not forget the analytics-
When you use SEO, it is important to measure your results by using analytics or some other tracking software. This allows you to track how well your website is performing so that you can predict the future. Without it, there is no way to predict whether or not your current SEO techniques are working.
No Page Headers-
Headers are important because they separate your content into smaller, more manageable pieces for search engines. You can use them to quickly identify what section of the webpage is being talked about in the text below it. Without headers, it makes it much harder for search engines to index your website, so use them on every page of your site.
Mismatched URLs and Titles-
These two go hand in hand because a search engine will only use your URLs for keywords if they are relevant to what is shown on the page. If you have a page with content about an artist, but you call it “gallery” instead of “artist,” you’re going to miss.
Too many H1 headings-
Using an HTML heading element is fine, but you can’t just use one for every page. Too much repetition and it will actually hurt your rankings, so use them sparingly. There is no hard number to go by, but search engines like variety in the types of headings they see on a website.
Titles are unoptimized-
Titles are the text you see in a search engine’s results, and they can make or break your website. Titles should be descriptive and relevant to what is on that page. They can even include keywords, just don’t overdo it. The title isn’t the place to try out new key phrases.
No Optimized Descriptions-
The description is the text you see below your search results, and it should inform the user what they are clicking on. Just like titles, descriptions should be relevant to the page (and usually include keywords). Try to keep them under 130 characters for best practices.
No Newsletter-
Newsletters are one of the best ways to promote your website. If you have something new, let people know about it! This is also a good way to keep customers coming back because they will start looking for new updates from you. You can use an email marketing service or create your own using software like MailChimp. It is free for up to 2,000 subscribers.
Mobile Browsing not sorted-
By using AMP, also helps mobile browsing because Google will prioritize any website that displays correctly on a mobile device. If your site is not optimized and the search engine thinks the user might be interested in it, it can show up as a result.
No AMP-
If your website only uses standard HTML code, it won’t look good on mobile devices. By adding Accelerated Mobile Pages (or AMP), you can make your site load much faster on phones and tablets. This will give you the edge when users are just looking for something to read on their phones.
No ALT text for images-
Search engines can’t see images, so you need to make sure there is a text alternative. Simply put, if your page uses a lot of images, you better have the alt tags filled out. This will help search engines understand what is going on in your photo and index it accordingly. If there isn’t any alt text, search engines might not index it.
Poor image optimization-
When you use the ALT tags for images, make sure to follow good practices for file size and keyphrases. You want your images to load fast so that users don’t get frustrated with your website. Search engines also pay attention to the keywords in the ALT tags, so you want to make sure they are relevant.
Canonical problems-
If you have pages that are almost exactly the same, then you should definitely consider canonicalizing them into one page. This is especially important if they are targeting different keywords or creating duplicate content issues.
By avoiding the aforesaid mistakes while trying to perform search engine optimization for your website, you are staying ahead of the common lot that is making these mistakes frequently.
